Trout fishing tips

When you have time going trout fishing is something fun to do.  When you just want to get away and relax.  Fishing is great.  One problem that I generally have when I go fishing is me not catching some trout.  So I decided to write up some trout fishing tips that I found that have worked great for me.  I learned that trout can smell odors from your hands.  So when placing bait on your hook makes sure you wash your hands.  Just cleaning them with the river or lake water may work.

I really like to go lake trout fishing and if you have a small boat chances seem to be better.  If you really want to for sure catch fish go to a trout farm.  Only kidding, that’s fun for the kids because you will for sure catch trout.  The owners of a trout farm stock thousands of fish and within a few minutes you will have one on the hook.  Make sure to check with the trout farm owners on the release policy.  The one near my neighborhood enforces you to keep what you catch because they will die most likely.

So the basic way to catch trout is with power bait which you can get at any store that sells fishing gear.  What color you use depends on your preference.  I like the yellow, but most colors should work.  I haven’t tried worms too much with trout fishing, but they work great for catching channel cat fish.

I’m here in Oregon and I will list some of the good spots to catch fish.  Also a great website to check is your states fish and wildlife department.  I’m not sure if every state has one, but here in Oregon we do.

Lost lake- The one off of highway 26 is great for trout fishing.  I have even seen some steelhead in the lake.

I don’t recall the one I’m about to mention, but if you travel to Netarts Oregon you will see it.  You can park right off the road and fish for trout.  I have had some luck and caught some really big trout.

Hag lake- This is a manmade lake that is outside of Hillsboro, or Forest Grove Oregon.  You have to pay a fee to get in and a lot of boats and jet skis use this lake.  However you can fish off the bank, rent a paddle boat or regular row boat.  Also the lake is really darn big.  If you get board you can play disc golf.  A bike path is along the lake I believe.

Stock ponds – Try horning’s hideout, which from memory is outside of North Plains Oregon.  I went to school with this family and they are great people.  You can also rent the property for corporate events which is really popular.

trout fishing gear

Trout fishing gear

A common problem beginning trout fishing anglers have is that they fish with the wrong gear.  When you go trout fishing you want to use a #10 to #14 shank bronze hook.  Also, when you line up the spool, use thicker line and thinner line at the end of the spool.  Use a light duty spinning reel with 4- 6 pound line.  Use a few small spit shot weights or clap on weights will work.  Spinners and jigs work well for catching trout.  Another mistake people make is getting in the water and having your shadow out in the water.  If you fish in the spring go in the afternoon and in the summer time go in the mornings.  These are the best times to go.  Your rod should be about 4 to 5 feet long.

Depending on which species of trout you are fishing, the right gear should match the particular trout you are after.  For example, when you fish for brown trout, use gold colors for rainbows use silver, and for brook trout use copper.
